Keeping Your Heart Healthy

One of the most important things we could do is to make sure that our hearts are in good condition. And by that, I don’t mean doing things like not smoking cigarettes, exercising regularly, having a healthy diet, or avoiding stress (although all of these things are also extremely important and vital to living a healthy life). Keeping our hearts clean and pure is something that  we should always be trying to do.

The human heart is one of the most important organs in the body. It is responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system and provides the body with oxygen and nutrients; anything that happens to compromise our heartbeats interrupts blood flow, and that can result in many different problems, and even death. The heart is also a very complex organ, with many different theories surrounding the way it works and whether or not our emotions are tied to our heart’s functioning. For quite some time, it was believed that emotions were strictly mental expressions that only the brain controlled. Now, it is understood that there is an undeniable link between feelings such as frustration, insecurity, anxiety and anger and our hearts. Whenever these feelings are experienced, our heart rhythm patterns are affected and change, in some way.

Having a ‘pure’ heart is something that many people are familiar with, but something that other people might not quite understand. A pure heart is not a perfect one, and a person with a pure heart isn’t perfect. Having a pure heart means that you are constantly aspiring towards being a good person. A person whose intentions are good. A person who tries to stay away from negative, unnecessary emotions such as greed, jealousy, envy or hatred. Of course, it’s totally impossible to not experience these feelings at different points in our lives; the key is to try to stay away from them as much as possible and direct our energies towards being the best people that we can be.

I hate to admit this, but I’m an extremely spiteful person. I feel like if someone hurts me, I need to hurt them back at least 100 times as bad. I’m working on getting rid of that attitude, because I’ve realized that being spiteful, trying to get back at people for wrongs done to you, and harboring negative emotions does nothing for you. It doesn’t bring a sense of peace, and does nothing but bring create negative energy and cause you stress. Being pure hearted allows us to direct our energies towards the most important things in our lives, and not get caught up in feelings or situations that cause us to stray from our true purposes.

Sometimes, it’s really hard to be nice to people who have been nothing but horrible to us, or to not be envious or jealous of people who have something that we want, or have achieved something so easily that we’ve been working so hard for, or to be angry at people for betraying us or hurting us. That’s fine. We’re human and feelings like these are natural reactions. When we do experience these feelings, we need to be aware of the fact that continuing to have them is bad for us, and well, our hearts.
